Chinese New Year

29 Jan 2025 - 30 Jan 2025

  • Chinese New Year, also known as Lunar New Year, is the most important celebration for Chinese communities worldwide. Marking a fresh start, it begins with the new moon and ends 15 days later with the Lantern Festival.
  • Preparations include cleaning homes to invite good fortune, decorating with blessings, and shopping for food and gifts. Families gather for reunion dinners, and friends visit to exchange well-wishes and traditional treats.
  • Symbolic foods play a key role: fish represents abundance, mandarin oranges signify wealth, and Yee Sang (Prosperity Toss) is a popular dish. Despite regional differences, the celebration centers on peace, health, and prosperity for the year ahead.
Thaipusam

Thaipusam

11 Feb 2025

  • Thaipusam, celebrated by the Tamil Hindu community during the full moon of the Tamil month of Thai (January or February), is a festival of faith, endurance, and penance dedicated to Lord Murugan. Devotees fulfill vows through sacrificial acts to express gratitude, seek forgiveness, or honor promises.
  • A key ritual involves carrying the kavadi, a decorated structure often pierced to the body with hooks and skewers, weighing up to 100 kg. Other acts include piercing the tongue or cheeks, carrying milk pots (commonly by women), shaving heads (for children), and distributing food. Devotees prepare through fasting, abstinence, and a strict vegetarian diet.
  • In Kuala Lumpur, the chariot procession from Sri Maha Mariamman Temple to Batu Caves covers 9.5 miles, with devotees walking barefoot, chanting "Vel, Vel." At Batu Caves, they ascend 272 steps to complete their vows.
  • This vibrant festival attracts thousands of local and international visitors each year, offering an unforgettable cultural experience.
